Smile 1990 F-150 2WD Sporadic Hard Shift

I have a 1990 Ford F-150 2WD with a 302 and an E4OD engine that has a sporadic hard upshift. I have changed the filter and replaced the fluids (I did not drain the torque converter). The problem is no different. Is their something I am missing......

Thanks

Becky

TPS and VSS can cause that.

You have a bad MLPS. On a '90 it's about a 40 minute job and will smooth out the way your truck upshifts. I ran into this right after I bought mine and it solved the hard upshifts. For the money, it was well worth the repair. You can also pull codes from the computer and see what it tells ya. Mine pointed me to that sensor.

They are all fairly inexpensive parts. How hard are they to swap out?

Thanks Again

The TPS can be a nuisance as the screws sometimes won't come out, and you have to take the throttle body off. Best to test it first.
The mlps isn't a very hard job (usually), and the VSS is simple enough but you kinda have to fiddle a bit getting the old one out.

Sorry so many questions. Would rather do it on my own the pay a garage. How do I test the TPS?

TPS is probably the easiest, but it's a motorcraft only part-anything besides a motorcraft TPS and you will more than likely have nothing but problems. Did mine in about half an hour but I got lucky and didn't have to adjust anything. Removed throttle body, unscrewed the bad one and put the new one in. Just make sure you have the wires pointing the same way as the old one. Some have had to put it on reversed then rotate it 180* but I didn't have to. I also didn't need to test for proper signal as I got lucky and had it in the right position (actually I used the clean area from under the old one to position the new) and she ran like a dream after.

I just bumped up "testing the TPS", which should give you an idea. All you have to do is the signal wire test.

More than anything let the truck talk to you. Pull the codes and you'll have a much better idea. It could be any of the listed sensors but until the codes are pulled we are all just guessing.
