Exclamation 1990 95,000mil Reverse only! Help tank issues too

While driveing 30miles an hour I heard a loud clunk from the back and the truck lost drive 1n2. Parked and only reverse worked. Dad changed oil two days or so ago and forgot to put oil cap back on. No signs of oil splatter and no burnt smells. Just changed transmission fluid and radiator fluid(rust color) and oil level is fine. Any suggestions on what it could be?? Other than scrapping it.

Also,
Front tank runs fine just doesn't show up on the dashboard, unless truck is off.
Back tank sucks have to turn overdrive off and get moveing while cold or it will shut off. But it reads on the dashboard while on.
Not my truck just helping out my dad the cheepest way we can.

Automatic transmission?

As for the tanks you need new sending units to get them to read right. I just had to do this on my 88. found units on rock auto for the cheapest around 55 each.

Sounds like a transmission problem. Forgetting to put the oil cap back on wouldn't cause that.
