Default 94 f150 steering box problem

My grandsons 94 f150 popped the bolts holding the steering box to frame. I bought a rebuilt box and installed it to frame,,hooked up pitman arm, everything went fine. The problem is I can not get the spline shaft from steering column to start on the new gear box.....I am missing something need advice..........I even tried putting old box back on, and can not get it to start on either......HELP

I think there may be a "blank" spot in the splines (I think, I can't check at the moment) so that it only fits one way. Check if there are splines all the way around or if there's one spot that has to line up exactly.

Try turning the wheels slightly to help it start.

Assuming that it's the right s/box it should go. Maybe try cleaning out the splines on the female part ? Toothbrush and solvent.
