Post Transmission help!

So i bout my first truck from my neighbor. It has 158K miles in it he took pretty good care of it only had 2 owners im the 3rd. The transmission fluid is really dirty i told him i was gonna change it and he said iit being a older tranny that changing the fluid in it would hurt it more. Im still learning but wouldnt changing it make it last longer? if so any places or videos that show how to change it? its a 98 XLT

Its a risk you take. Is the tranny slipping or any problems like that? If not " if it aint broke dont fix it " when I worked at a jiffy lube id seen vehicles come running fine and get tranny flushes and 2 days later theyed come in with the tranny slipping. But if you feel like you have to do something you can drain it and change the filter. But do it again after a few thousand miles. Because the detergent will break down the varnish and gum things up.
