Smog Pumps and Air Filters
The smog pump on my 91 is missing the hose that runs to the back of the engine where it would suck in exhaust. The smog pump still works, however it is sucking in fresh air. Would it be wise to put a little air filter on the smog pump so that it is at least sucking in clean air? OR... Should I just delete the system all together?

It works the other way. It pulls in fresh and pumps it to the exhaust.
There is a dual diverter valve right at the back of the motor that can direct fresh air either through the heads or down to the catalytic convertor.
It keeps the cats cooler and helps dilute the fumes coming out of your tailpipe.
The pump is low pressure and doesn't really take any power to run so it's just as smart to leave it on.

You can just see about 1/2 of it in this pick - right between the rusty vacuum reservoir and the battery. Hose coming off it that goes down to the air pump. That's where the pump pulls air in, then pumps it out to the diverter valve and from there to either the heads or the cats.

Yes that is exactly what I'm talking about. What I was wondering, is does the canister filter the air then send it back. Or could I put a little filter on the intake hole on the canister itself?
