Default Oil reading not accurate?

The truck has been dripping oil (bad drain plug gasket) and I know it's oil leaking. But the stick would show completely full. I put a half quart in because I know I lost at least that much and now the stick shows overfull. This doesn't make sense, any suggestions?

Little bit of warm oil can spread into what looks like a big puddle and big leak. So the leak is not as bad as you thought.
Solution to leaking drain plug gasket, hold a running shop vac over the oil fill. This suspends the oil, drop the drain plug and the fix the gasket.
