Default 5.4L V8 'oil consumption'?

So, since I have had the '01 F150 Lariat 5.4L Triton, I got it from my parents in the beginning of May, I have had to put almost 3 quarts of oil into it, with no signs of leaking underneath. The oil is not milky, and shows no signs of head gasket failure. I have been told that the 5.4L Triton motor 'consumes' oil and that Ford has no plans to fix it....is this true? Oil is expensive, and I want to find out what might be going on with the motor. I am no genius when it comes to this, but have been told either the valves or the rings are bad?? Help would be appreciated, I am having to commute to work very long hours starting next month as I finally got a job, and I MUST have a reliable engine to get me there and back until I can move to the town I will be working in.
