will it run if the eec is gone bad? I cant think of any other reason the voltmeter wasn't able to pull codes, the check engine light has been on since I hollowed the smog pump last year, but suddenly went out while I was conducting that test

Do a compression test, if gauge is not available, check rotor alignment with engine at TDC. Rotor will point to either #1 or #6 (if OK). OOPS. can't remember when we went to distributorless ignition, anyway still thinking valve timing.
