My mechanic has managed to crack the inlet manifold, in the place where the thermostat housing bolts on. The bolt split the housing. I cant see that it could be fixed except by replacing this inlet manifold completely. does anyone know if these are the same on various engines ? anyone know of a quick fix that has worked for this problem ? JB weld or similar

I can't speak for all implementations of the 5.0L, but I expect a trip to your local U-Pull-It yard will provide a usable replacement.
