Do I need a new engine?
Hi all,
My first post ever on this forum. I have a 1988 F150 XLT Lariat, 302, 2 wheel drive. Here's whats going on: About 2 weeks ago I had the transmission rebuilt. Then took truck directly to my regular mechanic to do some tune up work. He replaced the plugs and wires, and noticed significant oil build up on the plugs (they only had about 25,000 miles on the plugs). Still had issues with the truck not running correctly. When I drove it away from the shop the first time I only got about 2 miles away and it sounded terrible the whole way. It felt and sounded like it wasn't shifting out of first gear (I was in the OD gear on the steering column). Towed it back to the mechanic and they thought it was an electrical problem, specifically a ground problem. Picked up the truck again and it was doing the same thing: Sounded terrible and didn't seem to shift out of first gear. I was able to drive back to the mechanic. Now what they are saying is that the engine is shot. It does not have enough power to shift gears. It's leaking oil onto the plugs, and loosing oil pressure. I did notice the two times I drove it a short distance that the longer I drove it, the less power it had. I had trouble keeping it at 25mph.
They want $1500 to install a new engine. Tell me it's a 1993 302 with 127,000 miles on it.
I probably didn't describe the situation all that well, but interested if anyone has any thoughts or comments on my situation.

Maybe to many trucks?
Did you hear any knocking noises?
When I had a rod throw on my 88 F150 302 I had similar problems (I don't have a OD trans) and it would get to 2nd gear but not into third I pulled over and noticed what you said a few minutes later after running it and a rod went through the pan. Everybody I talked to agreed it would be best to replace the engine so that is what I am doing.
$1500 sounds a bit high to put in a used engine but of course I do all my work myself so I couldn't tell you for sure.
