WSO: Do you know if the 5.8L was serviced regularly? Example all 3K mile OCI? Or even 5K mile OCI is acceptable.

Air filter changed on a schedule?-->A lot of folks forget and neglect the air intake system.

If these 2 things were neglected? There is a good chance you might have a bit of sludge built up inside that motor. A good synthetic will clean really well and might cause an issue within some of the oil passages.

In this case: MHO-->Start off with 3 or 4 oil changes with PYB-{Pennzoil Yellow Bottle}--5W-30 or 10W-30. This oil has a lot of Calcium to slowly begin to clean the inside of that motor... It also has a good amount of Moly to help lubricate all those moving parts properly. Do 3K mile OCI. Make sure to use a Motorcraft oil filter.

Then you can switch to a semi-synthetic oil if you like. There are a good handful of them out there.

If no leaks after the use of the semi-synthetic--->If I felt the need for a regular synthetic I would switch with at least 7K mile OCI just to justify the cost. You might even mix the 2--->Say 3 qts synthetic 4qts semi-synthetic-{Same Brand of Oil}.

It all depends on how you use the truck. Short trips? Stop and Go? all the time? or highway and interstate driving? This all plays a very important part in choosing the correct oil and OCI. Towing plays a major part in this as well.

Synthetics have 2 major advantages--->You can extend your OCI with synthetic due to the higher TBN and Cold Weather pump ability. Todays conventional oils are very very good. They have proven to show similar UOA as the synthetics.

You have a lot of choices and decisions to make. Just use a Motorcraft filter and keep that air filter clean. Keep your OCI within reason. 3K to 5K miles with conventional oil and at least 7K to 10K with synthetic.

Good Luck ...

What is the recommended oil viscosity for the 5.8L?
