Default Can't get truck to start

Hello! I have an 88 that's been sitting for about ten years. We got new spark plug wires and spark plugs and general stuff like that. We went to start and I put some starter fluid in it and it back fired out the throttle body and started a little fire. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what could cause it.

a missfire would be a likely culprit, i take it you used the starter fluid because you had been cranking it for a while with no action?

now would be a good time to double check fuses, check fuel pressure, check injectors, check if the iac is stuck closed

replace the fuel filter if you havent already, if it's sat that long the pumps probably sucked whatever settled to the bottom all at once

really any number of things that could be included in regular maintenance, does anyone know why it sat for so long?
