95 Ford 302 using oil????

Default 95 Ford 302 using oil????

I have a 95 F150 with 90,000 miles on it. It uses oil I took it to a shop they checked compression, not sure what the numbers are but they said it's great on all cylinders. They did tell me they can tell me the oil loss is coming from cylinder 8. The truck runs and starts awesome all the time. It doesn't smoke or seem to have any other issues besides the oil loss. I know it's more than 1qt every oil change. I've read something about pcv valve issues could this be my problem? I haven't checked vacuum level but I will. Anytthoughts would be appreciated if anyone has heard of this let me know.

PCV is positive crankcase ventilation Which creates negative crankcase pressure. If this system is faulty (usually a clogged pcv valve ) it creates positive crankcase pressure which can force oil up past the rings into the combustion chamber.
So yes, it can be a factor in oil consumption.

I'm going to start with trying the pcv then turn to valve seals.

I'd suggest you use a Motorcraft PCV valve. Oreillys carries them for pretty cheap. There have been people (myself included) that have had driveability problems using anything else.

My 95 302 will use 2 quarts or more every 3000 miles. The truck runs perfect and doesn't smoke. Installed rebuilt heads on it and that didn't change anything regarding the oil use. My truck was up cream puff that I bought a couple years ago with about 100 K on it. The previous owner had passed away, he was in his 90s. I truly believe the only problem is he drove it to mellow that first 100k. I don't hot Rod it but I also don't drive like a 90-year-old.
My advice is to just leave it be and don't chase it. Add a quart of oil when it needs it. The only true fix will be a new rings, and that's a lot of work for an engine that runs fine.

In fact I did prior to installing the gt40 cylinder heads and it was on the high end of the acceptable range. Mines a good tight little engine, I think it just got babied for break in. It also had 3.08 gears, probably never saw above 2500 rpm's.

Valve seals probably aren't your problem. They usually only leak for a few seconds after start up. If you don't see smoke when first started, that is not the issue. Rings can be tested by coasting down a long hill, when you are at the bottom, give it throttle, look in the mirror for smoke. Your engine probably won't show either of these, because it doesn't use that much oil. A quart or so every oil change isn't bad at all. See when it uses that quart, maybe it is close to when you change it and the oil is just worn out. If that is happening, change it a little sooner.
