5.0L rebuild or swap

hey guys when i bought my 95 f-150 5.0L the speedo was not working and since that was not working the odometer was not working either so i don't know how many miles are on the engine. so i am thinking about three options here:

1. rebuild engine to stock specs
2. rebuild engine and bore over
3. swap engine for maybe a 351

now i know that basic rebuild would be the cheaper route but my main question is that if i was going to bore over the engine how big should i go and what kind of kit should i get. and has anybody here bored over a 302 before or just went straight to the 351. i am really stuck on this one.

edit: i will be doing all the work myself and with a mechanics help my budget is around $2000-3000

check out mabbco motors national long block program.. no core charge and great quality. can't really do the work yourself and machine work for cheaper than what y can get a long blok from them.

Jasper if you can afford them.

Save a headache and just get a new motor, if its in need of a rebuild your saving lots of time and money just swapping a new one in. Jasper has a limited lifetime warranty as long as you change your oil every 3k and document it. So if it blows up again you get a new one!

Jaspers are real expensive..

They also can't require you to change your oil at 3k miles to uphold a warranty. And dumping almost any oil at 3k is a waste.

Unless it's burning a lot of oil or knocking I would just keep running that motor. Mines at 235,00 and still runs good.

well i finally decided on what i want to do i am just going to swap out to a 351w i want to make just 350-400hp with this motor because i am going to upgrade to a 6 inch lift with 35x14.50 tires and probably a 3inch body lift just to make sure they clear good. i would think a 351w with good hp would turn them tires good enough so i can keep the treads clear while muddin.

Regear first. It will make a big difference

You do know that you can replace the speedo and odometer drive gears in the cluster for about $20, right?

kagan21 07-11-2014 11:14 AM

yea i did regear from a 3.31 to a 3.73 i thought i was going to stick with 33 but now im gong to upgrade to like i said 35x14.50. i was looking at comp cams extreme 4x4 cams with all trick flow for the upper end of the motor
