Default 460 low vacuum

I have a 84 350 w/460 4bbl 84500 mi. runs good loaded power is ok. But only has 13 in vacuum, but steady and a rough idle hot. Been a while since I have had to mess with a carb engine and am going to check timing and vacuum leaks and compression. Truck starts up good hot or cold, notice the temp on the factory gauge is about 3/4 up at 60 mph and 60 degrees outside temp (which seems high if you can believe the factory gauge), cooling system is clean. Did these year engines use a nylon cam gear from the factory? The reason I ask is the 97 F-Super Duty that I rebuilt had steel gears from the factory. Any ideas or direction would be appreciated.
