2 things:

1) consider a new mechanic
2) if it needs more gas, it isn't making the same power.

Although, if your 6th cylinder ever does come back, you'll probably be blown away!!!

consider a junkyard motor?

Some of my friends used to bash me for driving a Ford. And I asked em why?

Only explanation I got was "They just suck, always breaking down and stuff"

Funny how 2.5 years later, my truck is still running with no breakdowns, and 2 of those guys need engine rebuilds on their Silverado's and Dakota's will half the mileage I have.

The rest of em bought Ford's and love em, one of them with a 300 and 5spd.

The 300 Inline 6 was bullet proof. Back in high school one of my friends owned an 80s F150 with the 300 that had 500k+ miles on it, the engine was rebuilt once. I had a 95 with the 300 + a 5 speed, it had 165k on it when I traded it in for my 2001 and still ran like new, never burnt any oil and it never knocked or pinged. I checked the oil level like once every 4-5 fill ups, haha.

179k miles on mine. What can I say, it's a great truck engine. It's not fast (at all... ever) but it's got all the power needed. I've never been off road or doing any work wishing I had more power, just when trying to go fast lol. Uses no oil, doesn't knock, and I get 16mpg combined with 31s and a 3.08 rear

I have an 81 here thats been in the family nearly 25 years, i used to be so broke, i ran it on used oil, the stuff the gas station drained on oil changes, and when i would go to the junkyard, the junkyard would give you a buck each for pulling radiators, and batteries out of cars before they crushed them, while i was there, i would drain gas tanks, an run the truck on junkyard gas! That s a scrap ninja at work. That motor is still kicking, i really need to put the truck back together.

I've had to run mine on used oil. And it had leaves in it. It was when my valve cover gasket was leaking I added some every 5mins for about 20mins. I had a 5gal can in the back full of it.
