well unfortunately i replaced faulty dpfe, and replaced bad crankshaft position sensor. which is a very hard part to find since it has 4 common different names and many styles but was cheap about 30 duralast too. also changed oil and new ignition coil because the original was getting pretty loose. car was running really good felt better and smoother than usual more pick up less drag. drove just over an hour mostly 65-70 made a few stops started good ran fine no noise noticeable then i went to start it and it started but almost died had to rev hard to get it to run.check engine light came back on noticed intermittent noise was back car was runnin rougher .i will try to run scanner soon when i can get my hands on one. would a bad cat cause any of this. maybe it would be a relay shorting out or a connection under relay maybe a wire has a break in it or corroded would i test this with ohms or how. could i drill holes in cat if cat was really bad to relieve pressure until i can fix it they want just over 400 so it might be a week or two. any ideas are very appreciated i have tuesday off and half the day open for test and diagnostics.

Scanners are cheap or auto zone will do it for free if you can get the truck there. I would just get one my self if I were you. I got a elm327 for my f250 and it gives me a live feed and read/clears codes. The elm327 should work on your 96. Repull codes and go from there. Tap on that cats while someone is giving it gas. Ford cats seem to fall apart and rattle sooner or later seems like. My 2001 f250 rattles at start up also. As for it running good for a while after new parts than running bad again, it could be bad wires going to the dpfe or ckp. Do a wiggle test on the wires and see if it clears up. When was the last tune up? Take the cap off and clean the cap and rotor. Pull the plugs and see what color they are. Test the plug wires by the plugs with a timing light. What is the fuel pressure? Is it running rich? When was the time the throttle body was cleaned? Always reset the computer when any work is done.

The Crank sensor applies to all the problems you have listed. It is a fairly easy & cheap fix. $20 at most and about 20 minutes(if that). If your problem is not solved by replacing the crank sensor, the 'cam sensor' also comes to mind.

Ah, I was thinking of problems. I just saw the truck age. I'm a 17 year old D.I.Y.

ive replaced sensor already. still malfunction i think ive got it down to a wiring problem whether its grounded or open not sure still need to track down but im having difficulties finding any wiring diagrams that have any useful info other than what fuse does what. would love to find full wire schematics for 96 eddie bauer f150 4.9. these computers are crazy the way it all intertwines with one another. also i have noticed there is a relay or cap. or somethiing not sure what it is that is right behind the power distribution box attached to fender with plastic plug it has 3 wires going into grey box about size of spark plug with a cap on it inside cap is 3 prongs. the orange wire has been cut from sensor and hard wired from wherever it stems from to a relay (im guessing looks like a ground but plastic) that also runs a wire directly unerneath power dist. box. im stumped but havent had time to find schematics or track wire. my ignition coil has a single wire coming off that goes into connector other side is single wire that runs directly under ignition coil. connector at ign coil is a little loose. i have also noticed sensor behind brake i believe that is really loose its cylindrical and runs towards firewall. i just tonight replaced the relay for computer and pcm communication.this morning it ran better than it ever has i was amazed then after work it didnt want to start and ran like **** i was horrified whole way home so i replaced relay on high hopes.also put a new cat on no more rattle.i also noticed when it runs good and i switch tanks it does so really smooth cant tell but when running rough it jumps like i dropped cluch too quick. as for aktech i willtry to check the fuel pessure when i get a moment. tune up recent im very adiment about it new bosch wires new cap rotor and oil. also after reading haynes manual i realize i have been neglecting truck need to clean manifold throttle body and pcv or ecv -cant remember- elbow and some other things that will help. thanks for all the help any and all input is helpful. ill get back to you guys next time i find a spare second. autozone said they dont check cel's anymore because of lawsuit will look into code reader will be worth it in long run. thanks again
