Has the coolant level been checked? Is the serpentine belt on and the fan in front of the radiator turning?

If you have enough coolant and the heater doesn't work, I would guess the water pump has failed.

Should check your heater hoses, if one is hot, the core is plugged up.

Well, a plugged heater core won't cause the engine to overheat.

Sounds like a water pump to me. I believe the thermostat can be closed with the heater working. So that wouldn't be it.
