Default 1996 f150 4.9l fuel pump problems

I have a question.. my truck has the dual tanks and when I try to start it on the front tank it runs and idles normal until you give it gas then it will bog down and then it will get gas. it will not run in the rear tank at all. so to get the truck to run right I have to turn the fuel tank to the back and turn the key on and then turn the key off and put the switch to the front tank then itll run right. im thinking its just the fuel pump that's going out.. any help?

Sounds a little tricky. But first check your fuel selector switch. The contacts that relate the front and rear may be blackened. Remove the front selector switch from the front panel and remove the switch cover. If you see both contacts are black, sanding with sand paper will solve the problem. Also check the two springs by pressing down with your finger tip. If it doesn't have enough spring tension, try stretching the springs to allow contacts seat properly. Reinstall the switch and mount the switch to the panel. Note: Try not selecting the fuel switch while the ignition is on or while the engine is running. It can cause the one contact to arc (small flash spark) the front contacts and the other contact to arc the rear contacts. Name: FuelSelectorSwitch.jpg

Good post! Amazing that anyone would open up a tank selector switch! Do you suppose before going to that trouble, that cycling the switch back and forth a dozen times or so, with key off, might just "wipe" bad contacts clean enough to work awhile? imp

No. Mine was pretty crusty from not using the other tank. Cleaning it fixed it right up.

Clean the switch. It probably isn't letting full voltage to the pump. That's what mine was doing.
