At the moment I have a set of PIAA RS600 HID driving lamps mounted on my brushguard. They are great, but the warm up time bugs the crap out of me. So I bought a set of PIAA LP570 LED driving lights. I don't know how well they will do against the HID's, but if they're close I'll be happy. I plan on installing the new PIAA LED's one day this week. So I went out last night to take some pics of the trucks current lights. I did the '13 HID update and have been pleased with that, until last week. The passenger side high beam quit working and I suspect it's the harness. So I've sent a message to have it replaced. So here are the shots. The first one is just the Low beams. The second pic is with the high beams, but only the drivers side. I put red markers to show were the Low beam line is. The third pic is with the high beam and the PIAA HID's on. But I didn't wait long enough for them to get to full brightness. I used Blue markers to show about were the high beam line is. And the last pic is of just the PIAA HID's illuminated. Once I install the PIAA LED driving lights I'll post up a pic of them.

I don't know why, But I was having a problem getting these two pics into the first post, so I did a second post. The sky is appearing in these a little more because I was trying to meter as far as I could down the road, and it caused the exposure to be a little long. Plus trying to hold the camera still. I propped it on top the steering wheel and tried to hold it as steady as I could. But you can still tell how far the PIAA HID's throw the beam. I hope the PIAA LED driving lights can compare.

Well I finally got the new PIAA LP570 LED driving lights on. I went out to the same road, direction and about the same spot for the comparison against the HID driving lights. Until I get them aimed how I want, generally they look pretty good. First impressions are that, obviously, they don't produce the amount of light that HID's do. I'd say at this point that the LED driving lights output is about 75% of the HID's by comparison. Also I'd say that the illumination and throw distance is at about 75% as well. The color temperature is a bit higher than the HID's too. I think the PIAA HID's are about 4000K, and I believe the PIAA LED's are about 6000K. The first pic. is of the PIAA RS600 HID's and the second is of the LP570 LED's. Once I get them aimed were I want I'll post another pic. for a better comparison.

Here's another series of lights with the LP570 LED lights. Same road just turned around in opposite direction. Did the same order as before. Low beam, High beam (passenger HID still no high beam), High beam with LED driving lights, LED driving lights alone. After I took the picture with the high and LED lights on, I pulled the aim up on the LED's a bit for a longer throw. Still need some adjusting thou.

Nice comparison shots...I actually like the LED light pattern a little more. The HIDs seem to glare/wash-out some things close to the truck.

It looks washed out because of how I metered the pics., and different exposure times. What I should of done is put the camera on a manual setting and set the exposure by hand, and then used the same settings. I think one night this week I'm gonna do just that. May even take my tripod. I'll have to use the same settings that I had for the HID's to get a true comparison. I've only tried them out that one night. Once I go back out and re-aim them I expect them to have a better showing. The HID's do illuminate more of an area and further than the LED's. But I'm still impressed.

Here are some pictures comparing the difference of how the lights look on the truck. First with the HID driving lights then with the new LED driving lights. I added a picture of her with the old original Halogen headlights too. I think it looks good with the new LED's on her. But the old HID's looked a bit meaner I think....

Updated pictures - Finally getting around to this. These are the final comparisons (except with fogs on). I got the replacement harness for the trucks HID headlights. So now these will be with all operating correctly. I like these LED driving lights. They are not as bright as the PIAA HID driving lights. Nor do they project as far. But I can flick them on and off without fear of damaging the bulbs. Overall I think they great for what they are. I took these at the same spot as the other pictures.

It looks that way in the pics because of the difference in metering and exposure. To get a true comparison I would need to set the camera up on a tripod, then manually set the metering, exposure, and focus. It looks washed out because on those shots, I had to meter it closer and on a brighter spot to get it to focus. It's just like trying to take a picture of something in a shaded area on a bright day. Meter for the sky and you loose detail in the shade, meter for the shade and the sky is washed out. In that situation you could bracket your shots with exposure compensation. Or in post processing. In this situation it was just easier and faster to meter the way I did. Even though this particular road was off the beaten path, being a public road it's hard to get any "alone" time. I'll have to pick a week night and much later to try it with a tripod. We'll see.
