2010 F150 6000k HID Kit Install Headlights + Fogs
I thought I would make a short tutorial to show anyone how easy it is to install this aftermarket HID kit for your 09-10 F-150.
The kit was purchased from DDMTuning and it was around 130CAD Shipped to my door for the H13 Hi/Lo Kit & the H10 Fog Light Kit. So pretty reasonably priced. And I chose the 6000k bulb temperature for both, keep it classy. Too blue is ricer IMO.
Also the pictures do not really do justice to how the lights really look.
NOTES
1. The lights are not really blinding like they appear in the picture, the headlight housing is visible and you can look into the lights just like a halogen bulb and not become blind.
2. Not sure why my headlights appear to be more yellow in the picture than the fogs, but they are the same colour and the fogs may be alittle bit brighter because its a lowbeam bulb inside a small housing.
3. The amount of light output shown here is during dusk, they are incredible during night time, I'd say double the light output of the stock bulbs, and it stays contained. Alot of people think these HID bulbs let the light go wild. IMO the light will reflect in the same area in which the housing allows the light to be reflected, just more concentrated. Thats just my opinion though.
4. When I leave the lights in OFF position, there is no flicker. The Lights are simply OFF. Alot of people have been saying that their lights will flicker while the Daytime Running Lights are on. But I have noticed the lights are just off, no flicker.
BEFORE:
Above is the BEFORE shot of my Halogen Bulbs.
So this might not be the greatest tutorial since I'm not a mechanic, I'm a plumber. But its nice sometimes just to browse through the before and after pics. If you're thinking of doing this yourself, its not rocket science.
WHATS INCLUDED
Included in the DDMTuning HID Kits shown above is (Left To Right)
H13 Wiring Harness for H13 Hi/Lo Kit
2x H13 Hi/Lo HID Bulbs 6000k
4x DDMTuning Slim Ballast
2x H10 Lowbeam Bulbs 6000k used for the foglights. Its the same as a 9140 Bulb.
NOTE: All the connectors come with OEM Quality Water-Tight Seals.
HEADLAMP REMOVAL
First, you must remove your headlights. Since I'm new to this. I opened up my Ford manual and turned to page 79 for headlight removal. There is 3 Bolts to remove using a 10mm socket. After removing these, pull the headlight assembly forward and with a little bit of force I was able to get the tabs located at the sides of the light to come free.
FIRST
I started with the passenger side headlight because the DDMTuning Wiring harness is set up to mount next to the battery near the passenger headlight.
And the wiring harness comes across the front of the vehicle to the driver side headlight. This is all detailed on the DDMTuning website they have instructions for all of their bulbs.
After Removing the Passenger Side Headlight, I Wired the Wiring Harness to the battery and fished the wires through to the front of the vehicle, so that there was enough wire to reach each headlamp ballast. I just removed the nut on the (+)battery terminal and connected it there.
INSTALL NEW BULBS
Once I Took The Headlight off I placed the new bulb in right away. Take off the OEM Connector, Turn the Bulb Counterclockwise and twist the new bulb in clockwise.
MOUNTING THE BALLASTS
Now there is lots of room to mount a ballast in behind the headlamp, there is a section of frame I Zip-tied it to and used double sided 3M Tape underneath to keep it from sliding around.
I chose this spot to mount my ballast on either side. Since its a wide truck and the wiring harness doesn't have much slack.
I mounted both ballasts, and left the wiring harness loose until last to tie it down because it had to fit wherever the wire was long enough.
GROUNDING THE H13 Bulbs
The H13 Wiring harness must be grounded on both sides.
You Can See in the above picture where the black ground wire is on the left hand side of the picture.
Ground the circuit on either side behind the headlight, there was an 8mm bolt to hold the frame together somehow, and It was a great grounding point, I checked with voltage meter to confirm ground, no paint scraping or drilling. Removed the bolt, attached the ground wire for the ballast, and done.
This was the hard part, The H13 Hi/Lo Kit has the most wires involved.
For the H10 Fog Lamp, its pretty much plug and play.
Take Out 9140 Bulb
Insert H10 Bulb
Mount Ballast Using Double Sided Tape Provided with H10 Kit Only.
Zip-Tie for extra support.
Tie any extra wires back that are hanging loose.
PIC OF MOUNTED FOG LIGHT BALLAST(DRIVER SIDE):
You will have to find your own mounting point, I mounted it right near the fog lamp on the underside of the vehicle.
TIP>>
The H10 Bulb Required lots of pressure as well as some channel locks to push and turn the bulb into full-locked position. Gently turning with some channel locks and applying pressure to the back of the bulb put it into place properly. I think the tabs are alittle too thick. So I found this did the trick.
The H10 took me 15 minutes per bulb to fully mount, tie down and test. Easy.
Here are the after shots. Again the pictures do not do justice to how good they look. The camera screws up the lighting I couldn't find any angle to take a true picture of them. So you really just have to see for yourself.

What watt are your foglights? They look way bluer in the pics than the headlights

That said though, the camera does change what it looks like. In person, they look the exact same colour, but the fogs are a tiny bit brighter.
So maybe if you plan on doing this it might be a good idea to go 55watt headlights and 35watt foglihts. Even though 35 watt headlight is hella bright.

nice write up, looks great. but personally i think you should still disable the drl. even if its not starting up the ballast, there is still voltage being sent to the ballast. attempting to run on half voltage might hurt the ballast in the long run even if they aren't actually turning on.

But yeah you're right. It could hurt the ballast in the long run. So what I do is just turn on the lights before I turn on the car and its good to go. Until I can find a shop that will disable them for me.

oh yea its illegal in canada to not have them. well, with a quick google the only way to disable them i found is thru the computer options. so the only way to do it i can see is to go to a small town dealer and see if they will do it or pay them off. a custom tuner might have the option too nut i dunno. also it might be possible to mess with the wiring or relays youself to do it. i know on my alero it was simple as cutting a wire coming out of the bcm and grounding it.

I'm not too worried about disabling the DRL's though. I just leave my lights on all the time. Not too bad in winter anyways, its dark in the morning when i leave for work, and its dark on the way home pretty much. I am really enjoying the lights though/
For anyone who didnt see it above, the lights do not look like different colours in person, they appear to be the same brightness and colour. The camera cant capture the true light that they output. Thanks for reading my install.

Did you order that wiring harness for the H13 Hi/Lo kit as the option (for an extra $12.50) or was it included in the Hi/Lo kit? Do the fogs need a harness or no? Thanks
