Lots of interesting ideas out there on the fishing forums.

One was an electric-to-hydraulic actuator that gets rid of your surge controller. You use the in-truck electric brake controller instead, tied to the actuator. Not sure how well they work with Ford's built-in brake controller or if they're only for disk brakes. And they're not cheap!
I know several guys that have switched their trailers over to these EOH systems. I do not know if they are for disc only or not either. I do believe our F150s have a setting that allows us to use these systems in the tow settings. This leads me to believe they would have to be compatible.

I don't know the exact trailer you have, but the Equal-i-zer brand hitch is compatible with pole tongue trailers with surge brakes:
