Looking at getting a new 2014 with the Ecoboost soon and am wondering what gears/axle to go with. I tow a 29' house trailer 3-4 times a year and do a lot of town/country driving.

Currenty I have a 2008 with the 5.4 and 3:73s. Seems there are a lot more options with the new Ecoboosts

What do you guys recommend?

Depends on the weight of your trailer. My 2012 has 3.35(3.33??) and I pull a trailer that grosses out around 7200#. No problems at all.

If your buying new then do yourself a favor and get the Max Tow Pkg + HD payload pkg and you will be good to go. It's nice to have a little extra cushion when it comes to towing capacity and payload.

What gear does your truck want pulling 7000 with 3.31's? I'll bet it's not using 6th gear much? Probably 5th most of the time?

I don't know if I'd go with the 3.73 if you only tow a few times a year. Don't get me wrong the lower gearing is awesome, but it will impact your MPG. 3.55 seems to be a good compromise.

Also think if you plan to change tire size down the road. If that's something you normally would do to a pickup, then the 3.73 is a good choice as it will help compensate for a larger tire.

If you want a short box 145" WB, find a 7650 GVWR, that is only slightly loaded with options that you need/like, (XLT-XTR) this will give you the highest payload capacity. Once you start looking at trucks with the fancy leather pkgs, they seem to really lose payload. If you want the 157" WB then the 8200 GVWR is your HD pkg half ton(special order), the 7700 GVWR is the next in line. I'm a firm believer in the 3.73 gears if you do any towing....

Yep. 60 mph is only 1,650 RPM; even with 3.73's! Gotta think about that power band.
