Speaking for myself, it's not so much the distance between the mirrors, but their individual size. The Ford tow mirrors are huge, with a huge lower convex mirror.

They're not called "Elephant Ears" for nothing.

I love them when they're pushed in and I'm not towing, as much as when they're pulled out and I am towing. Especially as I have a Leer Cap that creates a big blind spot.

The Tappen Zee bridge over the Hudson River about (2 miles long) has lanes only 10 feet wide. That doesn't leave much room for error! I know when I'm bouncing around at 60 mph over the bridge (7 lanes) I have traded paint and touched a few mirrors a few times. Specially when the wind is pushing you around. So basically you have 2 inches of margin on either side and hopefully if your driving straight the guy or SEMI at 80,000 lbs is driving straight also.

Is that 9 1/4' from tip to tip with the mirrors extended?

Yes, but you don't leave them extended when not towing. As part of the hook up and unhook procedures, you extend the mirrors when hooking up, and telescope them in when unhooking from the trailer.

Mine extend about 3.25" for each mirror, and they are about 106" (8.7') wide when collapsed. My garage door for the pickup is 10', but because of trim the opening is only about 9.5' wide. I can drive into the garage with the mirrors extended only if I am very, very careful. With them collapsed, it's easy to drive in and back out without much worry about crunching the mirrors.
