Default weighed the truck and boat trailer today

I took my 1998 25 Contender center console on a dual axle, Loadmaster trailer to the dealer to get some work done today. Along the way, I knew I would be passing a Florida DOT weight station, so I got the weight on the truck and trailer axles. I am driving a 2015 F150 4x2 super crew with 3.5 eco-boost engine with a factory installed bed liner.

I had 5,820 pounds on the truck axles and 7,300 pounds on the boat trailer axles for a total of 13,120 pounds. On the way back after dropping the boat off I stopped and got a weight on just the truck. The truck weighed 5,340 pounds and between tools, stuff, and me I estimate there was about 350 pounds of payload for a curb weigh of about 5,000 lbs. The difference between the truck axle weight with the boat and without the boat is 460 pounds, which is the tongue weight. The boat only has about 60 gallons of gas in it, an empty freshwater tank and minimal gear, so this was a very light load condition for the trailer.

According to the 2015 Ford towing guide, the 4 x 2 F150 super crew cab with a 3.5 L turbo and 3.55 differential is rated for a total weight capacity of 17,100 pounds and a towing capacity of 11,900 pounds. The label on my vehicle lists the payload capacity at 1,716 pounds.

When towing the rig with 10% ethanol 87 octane at 62 mph, I get 8.9 mpg in tow mode. The manual recommends using premium octane for heavy-duty use, so my last 2 fill-ups have been with 93 octane. I got 10.6 mpg at 62 mph with 93 octane. The improved mileage with 93 octane is a wash, since 93 octane runs almost 20% more than 87 octane in my area.

I am very impressed with the towing performance of the truck. I had a 2003 Tahoe with a 5.3 liter V8 and the 3.5 liter turbo handles the load much easier. At 62 mph on level ground (a lot of flat highway here in Florida), I was usually in 6 th gear.
