Hi Sailor Don

Looking at the same set-up, what kind of roof rack did you use on top of the truck. Also is there enough room for two kayaks on the v-rack?

You can get the details from the V-Rack website.
http://www.usrack.com/v_rack.php
I purchased the TurboRack with the V-Rack as a matched set.
You could substitute any suitable roof rack.
This was a "test run" when I picked up two 16 foot long 4 X 4 treated lumber posts.

There should be enough room for two kayaks. You might have to use supports that hold them on edge.
I don't know how those work, but I've seen photos of them.
I'm not a kayak person..

I used to pick up used 'Ladder Racks' from News Paper adds.
$50-100 bought me several. I used them to haul canoes and a
12' Kayak. I sometimes cut off the portion that extended over the cab.
Ref. an old Toyota 4x4 that I hunted and fished out of for 15 yrs.
They work very well.

One of my "prime directives" in my quest to transport my rowboat on a roof rack is to not compromise the good looks of my basic Ford F-150 Platinum. (It was a $50,000 truck and I'm not going to cut into the plastic bed rail covers for a semi-permanent ladder rack.) Also, the conversion to rack should not take any longer than hitching up a boat trailer (maybe a minute or two).

Ladder racks and contractor racks are certainly functional, but not a solution for me.

Default Do it yourself kayak carrier ideas

My 2013 came with a plastic bed-liner. I've been searching the web for ladder racks, cargo carriers, and other systems that will allow me to carry my kayak above the bed and over the cab of my truck. I want a system that I can install and uninstall with minimal effort. I have yet to find anything on the market that will work with the bed-liner that Ford put in my truck. What I see out there requires that holes be cut in the liner and sections removed in order for the carrying systems to be mounted directly to the bed or rails. Cutting holes in the liner pretty much makes it useless and replacing it with a spray-on liner just so I can haul a kayak half a dozen times a year seems a bit pricy. Has anyone built a carrier that will work with the existing liner? Pics? Ideas?

Any reason that the solution that this thread is about doesn't work for you?

The V-rack system does not allow you to open the tail gait while the boat is in the air. In the past, I've used a T-Bar that extended out of the hitch receiver and then up to support the back of the boat while the front rested on a cargo bar on the cab roof. This system had two flaws: it prevented me from opening the tail gait and it occpied my receiver preventing me from using it for other purposes.

You are correct that you cannot open the tailgate while there is a boat in the rack. However, the V-rack does NOT use the hitch receiver, it uses the ball mount hole on the bumper.

I see this is an older post but I have the same situation, 2018 f150 with encore hard tri-fold tonno, hauling a trailer and I want rack for my canoe. The v-rack allows me to keep my tonno for storage and no big deal stepping over the tailgate if I need to get in there.
Where did you find this rack? I 1st seen it on Pintrest and it directed me to US rack which doesn't have it.
Any info would be appreciated thx
