True Curb Weight of Trucks?
Just ran through some numbers today when cleaning out the truck. I have weighed my truck a few times on a CAT scale here in town at a Flying J, and a scale at local mulch and materials yard. The weights have always been very close within fuel load differences. With a full tank or close to it, me(240 to 250 lbs), my in bed tool box with jacks, ball mounts, chains etc(200lbs), GN hitch (100lbs per manufacturer) spray in liner(80lbs per installer) it totals 5860. Its an STX 4x4, SCAB, 5.0 with tow package and minimal options.
True Scaled Weight.
With Driver, Hitch, Fuel, Liner and tool Box 5860
Front axle loaded 3200
Rear axle loaded 2660
Using Fords Dealer sourcebook, the truck should weigh out at over 6200 lbs with all that gear on board. Their is a huge discrepancy in what the book says it should weigh and what it does. I added up the weight of all options from the list in the book, and using my window sticker to identify what is on the truck over and above the base. I broke down below how it came out.
Source book weight
Base Curb weight(full fuel no passengers standard equip) 5461
Added options weight from the source book(rounded up) 97
Front axle empty per ford 3222(before options)
Rear axle empty per ford 2239(before options)
Total per Ford with no add-ons and passengers 5558
with weights of hitch, driver, tool box and liner should be 6208
Does this seem a bit odd to anyone? I am only 300lbs heavier loaded than it should be empty despite confirmed load being 650lbs.
This is a weight gap you cant overcome even by empty tank on truck which is less than 223 pounds even if it was bone dry. What this does is actually gives me payload of 2140lbs based on unloaded fueled weight of truck 5210lbs.
My sticker payload is 1792lbs, exactly what Ford's book says it should be. How can their curb weight estimation be off by almost 350lbs. That is a pretty big margin to build in. Not sure if anyone else has taken the time to weigh out their truck like I did. I am very confident in the weights of the stuff I have in the truck, The empty tool box is 85lbs per the manufacturer and I have several ball mounts, two floor jacks and several chains and tools in there. I know my own weight, as I am trying to lose some. The other numbers I got from the manufacturer and bed liner installer.
Interesting to note, book rear axle weight I think is pretty close, its shows 2239, and with 400lbs of stuff in the bed area the scale is 2660. I think the difference not accounted for with load is the factory hitch 44lbs per ford, and the step bars 43lbs. Both of those being either fully or partially behind the front axle would add to the base rear axle weight in the book. Since I never weighed the truck without the GN hitch and tool box its hard to say what the empty rear axle weight is. The front axle weight with me in the truck is 22lbs under what Ford says it should be 3200 loaded vs 3222 for unloaded with my body weight, thats a 270lb swing on just the front.
Not sure what all this means, but it explains why I can stay under my axle weight ratings and GVWR with this truck even while towing over the GCWR.

That is weird, even the sourcebook says you should only be base about 5558. Of course added equipment or extras can push that up. Wheels and tires can add a lot. The ARC capacity for the STX was 900lbs so that would be the max of factory options. Mine only has 97lbs of options.

2012 Screw 5.5ft bed XLT 4x4. GVWR is 7200. Best I recall, payload sticker says 1460 or 1490.
Weighed 6240 with me, my wife, and 1/2 tank of gas. (Full tank without the wife would be about the same). I do have a Swing Case with a few tools/ratchet straps, a full length AAL, 285/70/17-D Duratracs, and a Bakflip tonneau.
I want to weigh it on another scale to verify though. On this same scale, my Jeep CJ7 (GVWR 3750) weighed 4160, which seems high to me, but the only thing factory in it is the frame, body, & tcase.

I have a 2014 Screw 4X4, 5.0 and 5.5' bed with Leer cap. My GVW is 7350 lbs, payload is 1621. By subtracting the payload from GVW my curb weight should be 5729.
With 1/2 tank of fuel and no passengers or driver the actual weight of mine was 5764 lbs on scales. Considering the cap is 180-200 lbs mine should weigh about 5564 without the cap. That seems too light. The calculated number of 5729 seem more accurate to me. I've got to wonder if the scales I weighed on were accurate.
Added:
If I calculate the weight of another 1/2 tank of gas it gets me to about 5708, pretty close my estimate of 5729. I guess the scales were pretty accurate after all.

I believe base curb weight is stock, no options, full fuel tank and 140# driver. Options include sun roof, running boards, tonneau, etc.
