Default Trip report: Moving Daughter from El Paso to Payette ID

Home again, home again, jiggidy jog.

We made it!

F-150 EcoBoost ran great, CarMate enclosed cargo trailer towed great, Reese Straight-Line weight-distributing dual-cam anti-sway hitch worked great. No sway, even when passing trucks (or getting passed by trucks) at highway speeds, and regardless of whether the trailer grossed 2,500 pounds empty or 6,100 pounds when packed to the rafters with stuff.

We cruised at 62 or 65 MPH with the trailer loaded, and at 70 or 75 with it unloaded. Not the best gas mileage, but about what I expected. 9.1 MPG average on premium. Loaded or unloaded didn't affect MPG. Earlier trips proved that the EcoBoost engine gets better MPG with premium gas - enough better to pay for the higher price of premium.

We left home Friday morning dragging the empty 7x14 cargo trailer, and made it 320 miles to El Paso by early afternoon. Son Don from Austin arrived shortly thereafter, and we had the trailer nearly loaded before we quit for supper. Next morning we finished loading and got everything in the trailer and under the pickup cap except four dinette chairs. It would have cost more to rent a small trailer and install a trailer hitch to haul those chairs behind Daughter’s car than new chairs would cost in Oregon, so she gave those four chairs to friends in El Paso.

We left El Paso early Saturday afternoon and made it to Albuquerque before sundown. Then a long day to Nehi, Utah (just south of Salt LakeCity) for day two. Then on to Payette ID on day 3. We got it all unloaded and stored in the right place, then hung around eastern Oregon and western Idaho visiting kids, grandkid, and great-grandkid for a few days.

Coming home with an empty trailer, we left the easternOregon border on the Snake River on Friday morning, made it back to Nehi, UT before we quit before sundown. Then the long leg to Albuquerque on day 2, then home to Midland County by 3 p.m. Sunday.

3,175.7 total miles, 347.6 gallons of premium burned = 9.1MPG.

The pickup did have one oops. Cat converter went out at about 33,000 miles while we were in Payette. The Ford dealer in Ontario OR ordered the parts that afternoon and installed them the next morning. Ford gave us a rental car for the few hours it took to replace the parts. The cat converter is covered under the emissions warranty, so no charge for the parts, labor or rental car.

Earlier scale tickets show the empty trailer weighed 2,500 pounds. Loaded with daughter’s stuff, it weighed 6,100 pounds. So the net weight of her stuff was 3,600 pounds. We did an excellent job of loading the trailer and using every bit of cubic feet available in the trailer, so I was surprised the stuff weighed only 3,600 pounds. Tongue weight 700 pounds plus trailer axles weight 5,400 pounds = 6,100 pounds gross trailer weight, with 11.5% hitch weight. 11.5% hitch weight is close to ideal, so we did a good job of distributing the weight in the trailer.

My F-150’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) is 14,000 pounds, and our actual gross weight was 13,420, so we weren’t overloaded compared to the GCWR. So I didn’t expect, and didn’t have, any power problems when climbing grades with the loaded trailer at 65 MPH . But the bad news was that the pickup was overloaded over other weight ratings of the pickup. 7,100 gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and we had 8,020 pounds on the two pickup axles, or 920 pounds over the GVWR. Rear gross axle weight rating (GAWR ) 3,850 and we had 4,740 pounds on the rear axle, or 890 pounds over the rear GAWR. But Ford builds tough trucks, so we had no problems indicating we were overloaded.

Nice to hear about good trips. Even with the 3.15s you have, that little mill seems to handle anything you throw at it.

Good trip Smokey...must be something in the air...we are moving our son to Portland in 2 weeks with all his stuff...got a 8.5 x 20' v nose enclosed trailer and will have a car in it with all his other stuff. Trailer is only going one way...dead heading back so mileage and time should be a lot better.
