Trailer Tires

I Like Tires
Like I said, and the guy above me who copied and pasted a long write up about the differences, they are constructed completely different to do specifically what they are made to do and do it very well if you maintain them properly.

I would also look at getting a metal valve stem instead of the regular rubber ones. I've had 3 that were leaking air on my camper. Different times, but I ended up replacing them with metal ones instead.

Well idk what you are basing "heavy duty" on since they don't make LT tires in the common 15" trailer tire sizes so that's all heresay. Also as to your "Safety Margin" comment, they are actually the same if a LRE trailer tire has a load index of 117 and max weight capacity of 2830lbs than a LRE LT tire with load index 117 is identical in weight capacity and safety margin.

Some good tire reading on ratings... especially the SPEED info on the first site...

Not to argue with you on tires as I guess they are your thing and I do agree with you if you talk the same weight rating tires. But the exception is ST tires are rated at 65 MPH max and LT tires are rated for much faster speeds, many R rated which is 106 MPH. That was my basis for saying things like "heavy duty" and "safety margin". If they have the same weight rating and same max pressure I would want a tire that is rated for the faster speed without derating the load capacity so I don't throw the treads off or blow out the sidewall running down the highway as my speed creeps up. Also ST tires only have a total life of 3-5 years whereas a LT tire will live much longer than that. Given that, they must be built better for the higher speed ratings and longer life, right?

I started a thread like this a while back, got alot of good info. I ended up with Maxxis, they were the most suggested tire I found.

After 5000 miles and a planned 7000 mile trip, I replaced my Tow Max LR-D with Maxxis LR-E and expect to have them on for about 5 years. I run them at 70 lbs vs 65 for the LRD tires as they have plenty of weight capacity at that pressure, but have 10 plies instead of 8.
