Default Trailer Brake

I have the OEM trailer brake that was installed by my dealer, and I wonder if it's working correctly. I have the gain at 10, and the tires never lock. At 25 mph, I squeeze the levers together, and it never locks up. It was my understanding that it should lock, then I back it off a notch. My trailer is about 3200#, and the output on the dash never shows more than 1 or 2 bars . This is the first brake controller I have ever had. Does it sound like it working correctly?

When you say it never shows more than 2 bars, is that when pressing the brake pedal or squeezing the lever on the controller? If it's with the controller lever, are you squeezing it all the way? It should register more bars the farther you squeeze it. Also, if you have drum brakes on your trailer, make sure they are properly adjusted.

2 bars when braking with the trailer hitched. If I squeeze the lever fully at about 25 mph, it will show full bars all the way across. I feel the brakes work, they have just never locked up. I know that is a good thing. I was expecting for them to lock up at some point. Yes, they are drums, but how are drum brakes adjusted?

When you see 2 bars using the brake pedal, how fast are you traveling? The brake controller limits the output below certain speeds (11 mph). You mentioned 25 mph using the lever but didn't mention a speed using the brakes.

I see not more than two bars slowing down from highway speeds, or when I have to step on the brakes. I don't think I've ever seen 3 bars of output.

I did a who write up on this. Hook up the trailer and find a safe place to do an emergency stop. Go 35mph and slam on the brakes. If the brakes on the trailer lock up every thing is good. I pull 8700 lbs and my gains is at 10. I had to do a real emergency stop on the freeway going 65 and the brake system worked perfectly.

Copy, that. I think things are working fine. Maybe I wasn't going fast enough, and didn't stop hard enough to get things to lock up. I really need to stop over analyzing everything...

At 3200lbs, there is not much need for the trailer to apply the brakes, the truck handles most of that.
