Honestly if you want a slide in camper you should be looking at F250's. No matter how you slice it, an F150 won't handle any slide in camper worth having, just sayin....

I think you would want the HD Payload package if you are wanting an F150. Look at Ford's documentation for payload capacity. It has guidelines for camper weight.

Less than 1,800 pounds after wet and loaded on the road - per that link that acadianbob posted. And that's only with the heavy duty payload package. Without the HD Payload pkg, Ford doesn't recommend any sort of slide-in truck camper.

2015 4x4 SuperCab with 163.7" wheelbase (8' bed) and HD Payload pkg has a maximum camper weight of 1,762 or 1,756 pounds, depending on which engine you get. When you go shopping for a slide-in camper, you probably ain't gonna find any that light. Plus the HD Payload Pkg on an F-150 is a rare bird that dealers don't stock so you'll have to order it and wait 6 weeks to two months for it to be delivered.

So forget about hauling a normal slide-in camper with an F-150. You can haul a pop-up camper such as the fourwheelcamper, but not a normal slide-in camper.

So if your definition of a slide-in truck camper is a regular camper such as a Lance 825, then go for at least the F-250, or better yet go for the F-350 SRW (single rear wheels), The 2015 F-350 SRW with 8' bed and gas engine had a camper weight rating of 3745 pounds. You still cannot haul the typical 4,000-pound wet and loaded truck camper without being overloaded, but certainly a lot more than the 1756 pounds max camper weight of the F-150.

Notice I'm looking only at the Ford pickups that have an option of an 8' bed, so that doesn't include the F-150 SuperCrew. They make slide-in campers that will fit into a pickup with a 6.5' bed, but they are really cramped compared to those that fit into an 8' bed.

But talk to anybody that hauls a slide-in camper and they will advise you to get a dually and then enjoy the trip without being constantly concerned with being overloaded.

Also, keep in mind that all the weights listed in the Towing Guide are based on the truck's "payload capacity", and the weights listed will be for a plain Jane/no options truck. With a decent load of normal comfort and convenience options a truck will only be able to haul a camper much less in weight than those "sales" brochure numbers.


For "towing", the max trailer weights are determined with a skinny 150 lb driver and nothing else in the truck. I don't know, but I suspect the max slide-in camper weights are probably determined something like that. So, if you're going to carry a few passengers in the truck, and if you're going to get any options at all, plan on at least a 500 lb cushion below those "sales" brochure weights when shopping for a suitable truck.


As has been said, the F150 is not really very suitable for a slide-in camper.

No, the camper chart is different. It assumes a 150-pound passenger at each available seating position. Any position in the cab that has a seatbelt is a seating position. So my SuperCrew with 6 seatbets assumes 900 pounds of
driver and passenger weight.

Aha!! That makes a lot more sense!!! I don't know why they aren't more realistic with all the trailer weights, etc.
