I see a lot of disagreement on how to set up a hitch and while I think a lot of it is absolutely correct and admit I haven't read all of them I use the following procedure. A good way to get started is to first make sure the trailer is not near the max trailer weight. My trailer is 6500# loaded and my last truck was rated for 8200# the current one is 11200#. That was the maximum I would run on the old truck. My old trailer was 5500# and towed better. On a flat driveway or parking lot back the truck up to the trailer and adjust the hitch so the trailer will be level when it is hooked up. Measure and write down all 4 wheelwell heights. Hook up the hitch and adjust the bars on your hitch until the drop on the trucks front and rear are close. Check to make sure the trailer is still level or slightly nose down. Test tow the trailer and if it handles well in all driving situations then it is good. If you can't tighten the hitch enough to keep the trucks drop equal you probably don't have enough spring on the back of the truck. If all is well run it over the scale and make sure you are not over weight and it should be good, if not you can go back and get a lot more technical. I will admit I am no trained expert but I have towed a lot of trailers with several trucks. Hope this helps.
Mike
