Towing MPG - Ouch.

Just got back from a trip from Salt Lake City to Mackey Idaho round trip 580 miles. My trailer with my UTV, full 75 gallon water tank and Honda EU 7000 generator in the trailer it came in at 8700 LBS and truck bed full cooler and supplies. I got 11mph. I have the ecoboost and ran 91 oct. I did travel at 65 mph because of traffic and road construction. I am extremely happy with the gas mpg and how well the trucks does pulling the trailer.

I am thinking my tapered nose GN trailer must help a lot with gas mileage. I tow all over the midwest and upper south and at 70mph with my 5.0 I usually get 11mpg. It weighs 8 to 9k loaded. Just this weekend at 9k I averaged 11 for a 250 mile round trip.

If I stay ~60 mph I get around 12mpg but if I am on a long trip at 70mph it drops to 10mpg. I have about 2500 miles towing already on my 2016. I am happy with those numbers actually. I get 17-18 mpg unloaded depending on conditions.
I got 8-10 mpg when I towed this with my F350 so I feel like I am winning

I get about 11-12 while towing 5300lbs, 60-65 mph and not using cruise.
I was getting about 9.5 in the same terrain with cruise on and letting the computer shift how it wanted, but wasn't happy with the amount it shifted. Tried driving to match what I could see coming and was much happier. Never used cruise again while towing.

Negligible, measured in tenths if that. Mine was 7-9 no matter what I did. Hopefully changing out the 3.15 to 3.55 next year will help.

When towing, do you just select it and forget it?
Or do you manually keep the truck in a certain gear using "M" and don't use cruise control?
I really like cruise control, but I found the truck too quickly wanted to down shift from 6th to keep up speed.
If I forced the transmission to stay in 6th, it would maintain speed on most hills, only the odd hill did I have tap it down to 5th.
I'm guessing better fuel economy can be done without cruise, anticipating the hills and coasting.
