Default Towing MPG - Ouch.

New to trucks and towing in general. I was expecting slightly better MPGs than what the truck is reporting. Across sloping terrain(not full on hills) , Im getting around 9-10 MPGs. Wind not a factor, running with 93 octane at around 60-65 MPH.

2016 Lariat 3.5 EB screw, 3.55 with Max Tow package. Payload capacity per door is 1652#s. On my third 100 mile tow of our 32 ft ultra light trailer (6800#s wet/loaded). Equalizer WDH hitch.

Does the 9-10 MPG sound right? My expectations were closer to 12-13 MPG.

There are many more variables than you mentioned. But at that weight, it about right.

You're doing better than me! But my truck is higher and has bigger tires than stock. ::thumbsups::

That is probably about right with that much weight. With a 3000-4000 lb load 12-14 might be doable. One reason the 3/4 ton diesels are so popular is that they get so much better fuel mileage when towing. I wouldn't be surprised to see 14-16 mpg from an F-250 diesel pulling that much weight. But gas engines suck down fuel when towing.

For most of us who only occasionally tow the 1/2 ton gassers make more sense economically even though they use so much more fuel when towing. If you tow a lot the bigger diesels make more sense.

That's about what I get most of time towing our camper.

But at least I don't have to take running starts at hills like I used with my old truck.

How many miles on your 2016? If it's under 2000 MPG COULD increase slightly still.

Thanks all. Mileage is right at 2000. Sounds like my expectations were a bit high. No big deal - I love the truck and it pulls great. Was concerned about sway given the length of trailer (32 feet) but the equalizer hitch has worked like a champ. Barely feel the 18 wheeler's breezes.

9-10 MPG burning premium is not bad at all for that 6,800-pound TT. That's about what I get when dragging a 5k TT at 65 MPH on the plains between west Texas and eastern Tennessee.

The harder those twin turbos work, the less MPG you will get. I usually get about 10 MPG when towing my 5,000 pound TT on the flats without a headwind. MPG drops to about 9 when pushing a strong headwind in the hills. Dragging my 8k 5er across the Hill Country northwest of Austin, I get around 8 to 9. One trip I got only 6 MPG on a 300-mile leg when I grossed 27,500 towing a 21k loaded gooseneck equipment trailer. That 3.5L EcoBoost drivetrain with 3.15 axle ratio had no problem pulling that weight across the Hill Country, but of course my poor little F-150 was severely overloaded over the payload capacity of the F-150.
