I bought this truck because a much larger trailer is being considered this year. Now I can pull anything short of a semi trailer lol. Tow rating 23500 and payload of 5779. I dont even know the 3 horse is there with 3 horses aboard.

LOL I had a 99 F350 Powerstroke Dually. Pulled my BP with it, and didn't know it was back there.

WDH Hitch? We no need no stinkin WDH with the dually!!! Dropped the trailer on the ball and the truck moved 1/4"! Last year I really regretted not having that truck still when I went trailer shopping for an RV. Could have pulled anything out there with it.

Yeah the dually with the 6.7 is a beast, but gets same or better mileage than the 5.0 empty and much better towing. Only long trip this fall with dually and 3 horses it everaged 14.5 towing at 75mph. Trailer was between 9 and 10k that day.

Now that what I call good MPG. My old beast got 18+ in daily driving which was mixed city highway.

Maybe I should have looked more into one, but that ride would wear on me over some of the roads I travel. The 16 F150 bounces more than I would care for, can't wait to replace those awful shocks.

I get about 18 mixed, but straight city will net me about 14 to 14.5. Other towing trips have been 12.5 to 14.5, depends on hills and wind, if its headwinds that seems to kill MPG pretty bad. Get over 75 and MPG goes down fast too. Unless I am getting run over I try to stay around 70 to 75, which is about what the trucks are doing around here on the Interstates.

As for Ride, its not much different than my 13 F150 was. Over really bad roads it bounces a bit more, but we drove to the east coast and back around Christmas and it was really very comfortable to drive from OH to VA and back.

Would you please stop waving that thing under my nose. I'm trying to convince myself that I don't really want a new truck and you're NOT helping!

I bit the bullet and bought a new Shadow trailer. Below is the trailer. Dealer said it weighed about 2400-2500lbs. He said all I needed was a 2 5/16 ball/hitch and nothing else. Do you need any other special equipment, etc.? WDH or sway control? ( I have one for my camper). I don't always trust dealers when it comes to towing requirements (in regards to equipment, etc.).

Can you pull without? Yes
Should you pull without? I wouldn't but I don't pull trailers that large.

As for the weight load your truck up and run to the cat scales with it.

Depends on the wet and loaded tongue weight.

Crawl under the back of the truck and notice the weight ratings of the receiver hitch. It probably has a TW rating of 500 pounds without a WD hitch, and a lot more with a WD hitch. It's a very bad idea to exceed the weight ratings of your receiver.

No weights are included with the description of that trailer, so I'll guess at 7,000 pounds GVWR. You can probably pull the trailer home without a WD hitch, because TW of the empty trailer will be a lot less than 500 pounds. But you'll probably have to add a WD hitch before you haul horses. When loaded to 6,000 pounds, your tongue weight will probably be about 13% of gross trailer weight, or about 780 pounds. That' a lot more than the 500 pounds your receiver hitch is rated for without a weight-distributing (WD) hitch.

Many brands of WD hitches cannot be installed on that trailer because the V nose covers too much of the top of the tongue frame. But some brands are available that mount under the tongue frame, so you must shop around to find a WD hitch that can be mounted on that trailer.

Cheap WD hitches are available for about $200, but you don't want a cheap hitch. Very good WD hitches with built-in sway control are available for $500 to $600. I would insist on one of those. Here are some good WD hitches:

Reese Strait-Line trunnion bar is my favorite, but probably cannot be mounted on that trailer.

Check out these looking for one that is mounted "underslung" under the frame of the tongue:

Equal-I-Zer
Blue Ox
Husky CenterLine HD (not the TS model)
