Think the F150 suspension (GVWR) and GAWR of the 6 lug axle is also a problem.

According to the brochure, the only F150 that would come anywhere close to being within limits with what he wants to tow/haul is an HD Payload MaxTow truck, and even there it would have to be a 4x2 or RegCab 4x4 with zero extra-weight options. Even a 5L might do if he got the HD Payload.

Or, yes, a Superduty.

I think you can only get a HD payload pkg with the Eco-Boost or 6.2L

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Its certainly looking like I am going to need a bigger truck as I am going to be doing long distance towing, across canada and into the USA on summer vacations. We plan on spending 6 weeks out travelling every summer so the need for a large fifth wheel is there. So now I guess I need to decide between a supercrew ecoboost with max tow or a f250 diesel. Any suggestions are again appreciated.

You have four growing kids, you want a big fifth wheel trailer and want to take long trips. That has F350 diesel written all over it.. You will have more than enough payload for the growing family and just about any trailer, More than enough power and get much much better mpg with a diesel.

No, you can get a 5L HD payload but *not* a 6.2L HD payload, according to the brochure anyway.

Think the 6.2L is considered more of a "performance" engine in the F150 line, but somehow they market it as a "work" engine in the SuperDuties. Different tune? Dunno, probably all marketing ...

If you can afford it for longevity and power get the f350 diesel with extended warranty to cover any issues. From what I seen here similarly equipped f250's are only a couple thousand less then f350's which have much more payload and towing abilities.

Yes, 4x4 SuperCrew (with all seats filled, 900# now, 1000# next year, ...) and Diesel (an "option" that reduces the brochure payload by as much as 600#), plus 5er with 2000# pin+hitch or more: it all adds up to an F350.

Look at the Payload section of the Superduty brochures. Unlike the F150 they do not separate out the payloads for each engine, so take what you see there for the 6.2L gasser and subtract 500-600# for the diesel.

Not cheap though. The good news is that, around here at least, late model F350 6.7L diesels (2011-2012) are coming onto the used market place. Some with low mileage. And there's a lot more of them than the F150 HD payload trucks.

Alternatively, and at much lower up front cost, you could go with the F250 with the 6.2L gasser. The engine would be working harder and the mileage would be pathetic, but it would probably be within spec as it has a 3250# payload. Not much room to grow though. The F350 diesel would be the better option IMHO if you could swing it.

NEVER get a recent used super duty. From what I've seen here it is possible to find a good half-ton that hasn't been abused. But a super duty will virtually always be used for work and hauling. None of these companies or fleets let these trucks go until they are almost dead. Rolling back the spedo is also ripe here. Unless its dirt cheap I wouldn't even consider it with the amount of problems a used 6.7 can have from over heating and bad maintenance.
