Towing a 5th wheel with a 5.0 L
Hi there everyone,I am new here and looking for advice. I have a 2012 F150 Supercab with a 5.0 litre v8 and 3.55 electronic lock rr axle. I wanted to know if this truck is capable of towing a fifth wheel with a dry weight of 7800 lbs and a tongue weight of 1460 lbs. I will be riding 2 adults and four kids in the truck as well, about 950 pounds. Any information or suggestions are appreciated.

Short answer. Not likely to be under the legal limits. In fact you may be overloaded by the time you add 4 kids, 2 adults, and gear depending on the truck.
But what does the yellow sticker in the door jamb say is the max payload? That would be the most accurate estimate without weighing everything.

The combined weight of persons and cargo should not exceed 1790 lbs. So im guessing that the tongue weight of 1460 and passenger weight of 900 lbs make 2360 lbs. Thats 570 lbs over the limit. Is that way too heavy?

And that 1460 tongue weight is completely dry. You will be over that. And then there's the hitch weight of maybe 200#?

Actually im just figuring it out along the way here today. Would there be major issues being that far over the limit? Also i would be towing the fifth wheel with its dry weight beeing 7800 lbs and thats right at the maximum towing rating for this vehicle, add 250 lbs of camping gear and I would be over the limit there too. So anyone know if there are major issues being 770 pounds over the payload and 250 pounds over the maximum tow?

So, yes, major issues.
But maybe I'm just being over-sensitive about being over-weight. I once over-loaded my rear axle by a lot, and ended up with busted rear bearings, and a rear axle/wheel pulling out from the housing. Luckily it was at low speed in town, and a pedestrian flagged me down. But at high speed towing a trailer and with my family in the truck ???? No. I've never exceeded any of my truck's GAWR since then. (Although I did go over the GVWR on my last truck for a year until I got the F150).

With my '07 f150 with 1700lbs payload I've overloaded it by as much as 800lbs and it sat low virtually at the end of suspension travel with the weight properly distributed. Not a good feeling, but it was a short trip (15miles).
Depending on the amount of suspension travel you have and your bed/cab combo I'd maybe get the passengers to take another car too as a possibility.

I say no, you'll be fine if this is a one time thing and you take 50 mph roads and be very cautious about uneven roads. If you plan on towing this thing regularly you'll need a max tow ecoboost or a f250.

To the OP, It's way to much trailer for your truck. If you decide to do it i promise you it will be a very unpleasant and white knuckle experience every time you get behind the wheel. I suggest you look at smaller trailers or a bigger truck..
