Equal-i-zer has a useful tool on it's website for estimating the size of WDH you will want. It includes the weight in the truck bed behind the rear axle and (I suspect) the weight of the hitch, as well tongue weight and trailer weight.

Always best to load trailer and truck as packed for trip and make a run to a public scale to see true weight. Search an rv website for proper ways to weight. Tougue weight can be gotten with a bath scale, 2by4 and a brick.

Yes. If your Darling Wife loads the TT to the gills, then you could have hitch weight more than 600 pounds. You want the spring bars rated for more than the max hitch weight you could ever have. Since the Reese Strait-Line, Equal-I-Zer and Husky Centerline hitchs are all available with 800-pound spring bars, that's the ones you want.

My hitch weight is about 600 to 650 pounds, but my ProPride hitch is rated for up to 1,400 pounds tongue weight. No problem. Per discussion with the ProPride folks, I simply tighten the sprng bars to the correct tension for my tongue weight, and it works great. You can do the same thing with the chain lengths on the Strait-Line hitch, although you can't fine-tune the tension as exact as I can with the ProPride, which has screw-jack tensioners.

I didn't mention a ProPride hitch in my earlier post, because they cost three times as much as the other good WD hitches, and the benefits of the ProPride hitch over the Strait-Line are not required for 99.9% of towing conditions. I replaced the Strait-Line with the ProPride for my TT, but I still tow my 7,000-pound cargo trailer with the Strait-Line. But if you want the very best, then consider a ProPride hitch.

Been there, done that. But I wasn't satisfied. So I invested in a Sherline Tongue Weight Scale. I haul it in the "basement" of my TT, and use it frequently.
