Default To tow, or not to tow.

Greetings !

I just bought a 2013 f150 supercrew XLT.
5.0 with a 6 speed.

It has a button on the shift handle for towing.
But..........there is no hitch reciever !!

I have a 28 ft. travel trailer, 6,900 lbs.

I kept the electric brake box from my last supercrew.

Unfortunately,
No original window sticker.

Is there somewhere online I can look..( with the vin )
to see if this truck has a tow package ?

I didnt see a transmission cooler, so this aint good.
Feeling pretty dumb about right now.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bigdaddy95

So you have the tow/haul mode built into the tranny, but you don't have the regular tow pkg. The 2013 XLT with base trim pkg did not come with the towing pkg. It was an option that whoever ordered the truck left off.

The trailer tow pkg (535) includes:
7-pin wiring harness
auxiliary (oil to air) tranny cooler
Class IV trailer hitch receiver
Select shift tranny (includes the "M" range and paddle shifters)
upgraded radiator

Notice that the 535 pkd does NOT include the integrated trailer brake controller (ITBC), which was available as a separate option.

Since you don't have that pkg, then you need more than just the receiver. You also need to add the oil-to-air tranny cooler and replace the radiator with the super cooling radiator.

I have a 28 ft. travel trailer, 6,900 lbs.
You'll probably be overloaded when on the road. My '12 F-150 with 7,100 GVWR and the regular towing pkg is overloaded over the GVWR with my 19' TT that has GVWR of 5,600 and grosses 4,870 pounds when wet and loaded on the road.

I kept the electric brake box from my last supercrew.
That's the ITBC, and it will probably work but only after a Ford dealer properly installs it and then flashes the PCM to make the PCM recognize the controller.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Any decent Ford tech should be able to add the parts you need to have the equivalent of the 535 trailer tow pkg - except for the Select Shift tranny. Since your tranny has the tow/haul mode, I don't see any need to have the expensive select shift tranny just to tow a TT.

Well, you can do many of the add-ons required quite inexpensively. But for a trailer of that size, I would most certainly add a transmission oil cooler. That will run into a little more money. The radiator might be of some concern as well. Whether you need to do anything about could wait to see what you experience for water temps. Environment for towing will make a difference. Things like distance towing, outside temperature, elevation and elevation changes, towing speed, wind conditions, etc.

No factory tow pkg is limits you to #5000.
Definitly do a tranny cooler but with a tt on the highway its gonna hunt gears if you cant lock out 6th. It wont be the ideal set up but it will do it.

If no integrated hitch, then you don't have any tow package or coolers and are limited to only 5000 lbs towing. I didn't even think any dealers would stock a truck without the tow package, makes no sense.

Anyhow you can go to shop dedicated to towing and have them put the needed gear on. You'll likely need a transmission oil cooler, an oil cooler, a larger radiator (tow package adds larger radiator), and of course electrical for the 7 pin towing connection, and the hitch receiver.

My issue would be with a newer truck, is that Ford could deny warranty claims since you are adding components that interfere (enhance) with the liquids of the engine. If something happens engine wise, it could be a battle. It's your decision if you want to take that gamble. Being it's used, you may want to take that gamble. Now if you only have the 3.55 gears, you're limited to only 7700 lbs towing even with the Ford tow package. You need the 3.73 gears to get the max 9300 lbs tow rating.

Go to a good qualified shop and have them do a work up for you, and see what it'll cost and what they can do to get you maximum towing. Also make sure that they certify or guarantee that the truck can tow what they rate it for. See if they can add temp gauges for your transmission oil as those may be more accurate than Fords.

Hope it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg to get it up to par for your needs.

Good luck

I live in n.h.
So temp. Isn't really an issue.
It sounds like the tranny cooler is the first thing I'll mention when i go to the dealer today.
Thankyou
