Default Tires for towing

About to buy a travel trailer that weighs 6500lbs wet and is 29 feet long from hitch to bumper. I have done all the calculations and my 2015 2.7 with 3.73 gears and standard payload package will tow it. - GVRW -6250lb, 1625lb payload and 3300lb rear axle.

But it is about time for new tires and while I am replacing them I might as well figure out what the best size tires are for towing. Right now it has 265/60 18's on it. Should I stick with that size or go to something else? Rims are 18x7.5 chrome.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Assuming you have OEM tires, I'd look for a higher load range tire

Bfg 275/70/18. That's what I'm getting when mine are ready to be replaced.

If you go with 275/70/18's they are nearly 3" taller. You'll effectively change the axle ratio. How much I can't say for sure say, but my rough calculations estimate somewhere between 3.55's, but closer to 3.31. How much would your truck be rated to tow if it had 3.31 gears?

You are working close to the max with the combo you have from the factory, If you want to tow that much I wouldn't go with a taller tire. If towing lighter loads maybe. The tires that came on your truck will get the job done. A heavier duty LT tire that matches the same diameter wouldn't hurt, but is not a requirement either.

You can compare tires sizes here.

I would NOT change to a different size. Go LT Load Range C. Lots of choices. The stiffer sidewall feels better when towing. Do NOT get Load Range E; very stiff ride and not necessary.

i have 3.73 and 275/65/18..i plan to go to 275/70/18...the new ratio will be around 3.60 which i can deal with..if i stepped up to 295/70/18 < cuz they look badass id start to loose big, my 3.73 would be down to 3.47.

so dept on the factory ratio you could go up, but with a n/a engine and starting with 3.55 or 3.31 i wouldnt go up without regear to 4.10 or 4.56 dept on tire size.
