I really appreciate everyone chiming in. My truck has 145K miles on it. The tranny was one of my major concerns. I have 3.55 gears. Truck is a 2wd. Adding gears is cheaper than a new to me truck. Would going to 4.10s help much?

It would help a little. But for the price, and minimal increase in pulling power, meh..

I had an '01 5.4 that did a very little light towing, 2500# max., but mostly just commuting to work. The transmission gave up up the ghost at 160,000 mi. Better save up a little cash for a refurbished transmission.

I felt like the tranny would be the week point. How much did you pay for your tranny replacement?

$2,000 installed at an independent shop for a Ford warrantied refurbished unit, but that was 5 years ago.

Ahh, it's likely at least half again as much at this point.

Part number 7000
Auto Trans Assembly 4R70E for 4.6L 281 CID 8 Cylinders - RWD; engineering number: 7L3P-7000-BA,BB, model tag number: PKF-FG,GG
List: $2,273.33

That's the current price for the Ford rebuilt 4R70E tranny. Add about $400 for R&R labor cost and $100 to fill it up with synthetic ATF and it should be less than $2800 plus tax.

I'm pretty sure the Ford rebuilt tranny includes a new torque converter. But if it doesn't then add:

Part number 7902
Auto Trans Torque Converter for
4R70E 4 Speed Trans for 4.6 Single Over Head Cam EFI;
List: $336.32
