EDIT: Why I replied to this thread I do not know. It's as old as the hills.

Just a FYI

Lightnings do NOT have a beefier rearend it's the same rearend that every other 97-03 5.4L truck had.

Lightnings do have a stronger tranny(4R100) than the normal F-150(4R70W), but it's no different than any other F-150 that has the 4R100.

Lightnings do NOT have a bigger tranny cooler. They have the same cooler that every other tow package equipped 97-03 has. It does have a larger 2 core radiator that the tranny lines pass through but you passing tranny fluid through a 185ish degree radiator so I would call it more like a tranny heater, cause honestly that's why it passes through it.

I wouldn't tow over the rating for the truck. It's just flat out unsafe.

Another note that nobody has touched on is that the Eaton makes a lot of heat. It's nicknamed the Heaton. With that being said your IAT2 would be through the roof and the computer starts to pull timing with IAT2s over 150 so that you don't start detonating and hurt the motor, the trade off is you lose tons of power. I owned a 03 F-150 SuperCrew FX4 lifted on 38" tires. It had a 2003 Lightning motor in it. I personally and other Lightning owners have seen IAT2 temps as high as 30-40* higher than ambient temps withOUT towing. Hooking a trailer almost twice the rating of the truck is just asking for trouble!

The weight of the truck also is much much lighter than the trailer, someone mentioned tail waging the dog?

This info comes from actually owning a lightning powered truck that I built, as well as doing mechanic work as a side job that I just happen to specialize in Lightnings and Harleys.
