Default Sanity Check.....

I know there is a ton of discussions on this topic, however, with all setups being different I wanted to make sure I am approaching this properly and calculating numbers correctly.

Researching TV and TT for first time RVers.

Considering GD Imagine 2950RL https://www.granddesignrv.com/imagine2950-floor.php

Specs show UVW 6862#, Hitch Weight 774#, 33ft long

TV Specs 2012 Ford F150 Lariat Screw 6.5ft bed, 3.5EB, 3.73 gears, 157" WB, Max tow/off-road package.

Towing Specs for the vehicle
GVWR - 7700#
Payload - 1840#
GCWR - 17100#
Max tow - 11100#

Assuming the wife and I as passengers 325#, cargo of 300# in the truck, assuming 1000# in the trailer brings the trailer weight to 7862#. Creates a 13% tongue weight of 1022#.

Added together I get 325#+300#+1022# = 1647# of cargo that leaves 192# of cargo capacity left. Add 100# for the WD hitch and I have 92# of available cargo. If I did my numbers right it seems like I am at my limit for this truck and trailer setup and might want to step up the truck to a F250 or go with a lighter trailer. What is sway like on a 1/2 ton and 33" trailer?

What am I missing? Is my methodology accurate? Is 300# of cargo and 1000# in the trailer realistic estimates. We plan to use the trailer for my wife and I and take it on weekends and potentially on longer hauls for several weeks at a time in the future.

Nothing has been purchased yet, I just want to make sure I am considering everything so we can have a peaceful and safe tow experience. Thanks!

By the time you ad the WDH, batteries and propane you are at your limit. If going this route get a higher end WDH.

Thanks, I accounted for the WDH above and wouldn't batteries, propane etc be included in the 1000# I am estimating for additional trailer weight and/or the 300# cargo weight in the vehicle? I am assuming that 1300# is our "fully loaded" weight to include any fluids and stuff for the trip. I really was wondering if my logic was sound and if I was calculating the necessary numbers correctly. Thanks again for the response.

Usually the tongue weight listed is not the actual tongue weight. I don't think it includes propane or batteries and is calculated on a base, un-optioned trailer. I think you'll be well over 1000 lbs on your tongue which may exceed your hitch rating and probably rear axle rating.

In terms of sway and handling, I don't think you'll have a good time with this set-up. That is a lot of trailer for the truck. I'm not saying it can't be done, but you'll be much more relaxed and in your limits with a lighter trailer or 3/4 ton truck. Hope this helps.

Before I picked up my '16 I had the same set up in my '14. My camper is 30ft with a tongue weight of #723 and the only time I know it is behind me is when it was very windy on a trip back home. Out side of that I have never had an issue towing my camper.

Only thing I did to my '14 was I put load E tires on.
