For Farm use. But its a trailer different than a truck rules arnt as strict I have never had any issues or been pulled over by highway patrol or city cops for it.

haul non farm related stuff on that trailer and take the chance of getting pulled over. a farm trailer is supposed to be used for agricultural use only. When you apply for the tag and sign the form you are swearing that you have a farm and that the trailer is for ag use ONLY. If caught it's a third degree felony. Now in Texas if you want to buy items tax free (for farm use) you have to have a tax number. The cops can very easily check and see if you have a tax number, if you don't then more than likely you don't have a farm and you are caught.

Pay the proper fee and quit trying to cheat the system.

Iowa doesn't have a farm tag system and were farm country.... Pretty sure trailers are registered by a combination of length and width. Ag trailers (hay racks, grain wagons, feeders, etc) are excluded from the registration. I don't know the specifics of it....

There should be a VIN number on the trailer. Pull it and have DMV run the number to see who the owner is. IF it is not stolen, you can get the owner to request a replacement title ($10.00) and get it registered properly. I live in Texas and did this for a jet ski. Fairly simple, though it is time consuming.
