It seems I'm the odd man out.. Given the overwhelming responses, I figure I'll give it a shot.

The new 5'r arrived today, so perhaps when we trade the TT on it next week on my first haul I'll give it a go with the good stuff

I know it's different but, I have a 5 liter 4x4 crew with the heavy duty payload package. As a daily driver I average 16 mpg. Straight highway is 20 mpg and nothing better. Towing a 6x12 cargo trailer at 5,000lbs on flat roads like the NJTPK, I average 10 mpg plus or minus 1 in either direction. Setting cruise control at 65mph. Not an ecoboost, But my comparison.

Another vote for premium while towing. For me, there are a few reasons. First (and probably the most significant contributor to increased mileage) is that our 87 is 10% eth while premium is non-eth. That right there is around 4% better mileage. On top of that, it does seem stronger and seems to hold 5th easier on the same hills/speeds. Finally, Ford recommends it and it's forced induction. I don't care how safe Ford made it, I'm using premium while towing 8500+lb.

With the HD payload package, it tows like a champ and I'd like to keep it for a while. Don't want to take any chances. Usually see 1 mpg better so the 10% higher cost is covered.

Its all about the cod/fa. My eco could squeak out 12+ pulling my ultra low profile vnose car hauler @ 9500lbs and barely 9 with my TT @ 7000lbs

2011 eccoboost towing 7.000 over Berthoud and rabbit ears pass regular 87 gas no problem you might gain a few poneys with premium but with the EB I have never felt like I needed any more power and the truck ran just fine. So run what your comfortable with youl be fine either way. Just stay away from the 85 octane sold as regular at higher elevations.

I was kind of thinking about trying it both ways. I tow over Monarch Pass to Saguche Park to ATV several times a summer. Will post some results in August or September.

Thanks to all of you for your responses.

I have been towing a 6,600 lb travel trailer alot going hunting, camping and over the rocky mountains 3 times. I have done it using premium and Regular Gas, the Ecoboost has more than enough power you don't really notice the difference I just feel better when pulling the rockeys to use premium. I have the tall 3;31 gears in my Screw XLT and no hill slows me down and I still have lots of Extra power to go around anyone if I need to.

I use 91 octane in conjunction with a 91 Tow Tune from Livernois. When towing, this combination has been excellent. My EB kind of reminds me of my 01 Superduty 7.3L.

If I have to run prem. gas in order to tow with a gas engine then I might as well just use my diesel truck.

I seriously doubt Ford had fuel mileage in mind when it recommends 92+ octane while towing. The higher the octane the less flammable the fuel is. These 6 cylinder engines boosted with turbos are running hot as hell at the cylinder heads while towing. There's more of a chance of detonation using the lower octane.

So if Ford says "use premium while towing", I would use premium if I were you, at least use middle grade.
