Default purchasing a 2015 for with 2.7l ecoboost.

Hello all.
I'm purchasing a 2015 f150 xl with 2.7l ecoboost engine. Max towing capacity is around 7500 pounds. It has the tow package with the intergrated trailer brake along with the off road package.

I am planning on pulling a 2 horse trailer that weighs 2800 pounds along with 2000 pounds of horse. I've never had a rig so I need suggestions on what I need to haul safely besides what I already have.

I won't be hauling all the time so I feel the smaller engine is suited more for my needs.

The 2.7 will pull it no problem. You will probably need a Weight distributing hitch if the trailer tongue weight loaded is more than 500lbs if for no other reason to put weight back on the steering axle.

There are other more experienced people on here that will chime in too.

Thanks! Any recommendations on a weight distributing hitch? How Are they installed? Where are these in conjunction to the ball?

One of the more popular ones is the Equalizer. But there are cheaper ones that may be effective for what you are planning to tow.

You are gonna need the payload off the yellow sticker on the inside of the door of the truck. I am not sure how the tongue weight works on horse trailers but when I look at them I treat it like a travel trailer and assume the high end of the tongue weight will be 15%. If that is the case my truck with 1700 lbs of payload comes pretty close to being over loaded with most of the 2 horse trailers I have been looking at. I would really like some pro advice on this since all I can find on the horse sites is that I would need at least a f150 to pull any live stock safely

I pull a 3H GN with my 13 5.0 SCAB 4x4 STX. It does great and is not over the limits when loaded. I would suggest the 5.0 or 3.5 EB to get more payload for the horse trailer towing. My truck is lightly optioned so has about 1800 pound payload. I would suggest looking at lighter GN trailers vs bumper pulls, they have more room and pull much nicer. I have pulled both 2H bumper pull and my GN and I will do the GN anyday.

5000lbs would equal 750lbs of tongue weight @15%. + 100 for her hitch. Unless she is hauling a bunch of feed or gear she should be ok.

Keep in mind most 2H BP are tandem axle trailers and have somewhat light tounge weights due to the horses being on the trailer axles almost completely. They are often lighter tounge weight loaded than empty. I would expect closer to 10% than 15. This is especially true for slant loads with front tack/dressing rooms.
