Possible new tow rig OPINIONS

I77 gives you plenty of 6-9% grades...depending on how far north in WV you are. Hilly route for sure.

Yep those hills are a bear, I pull WV, KY, and southern Ohio, so know that area well. On the really steep long ones I have hit 3rd a few times, but still never passed 4k rpms which compared to 8s of yesteryear ain't bad.

Yeah, I'll pick up 77 south in charleston. Just where it starts getting rough. We have a few short trips planned closer to home so i will get some more time behind the wheel with my current truck. Maybe I'll get used to it and be ok. If not, I might look into an f250 with the 6.2. Might be a happy medium between half ton and full diesel tow rig.

The 250 with 6.2 has roughly similar torque curve to the 5.0. Other than the eco, the diesel will be the only one that will pull down low. The 5.0 does a good job, but it does rev a bit. I checked mine today and 3k is 70 or so in 4th. Didnt try third but its probably 3800 to 4k. Do you know if are you on stock tires? Mine is stock with 18s.

These are the power curves for the '11-'14 Ford light truck engines. Sorry I don't have the newer ones. Pick a point to compare the 5.0 to the 3.5. If you need 275 hp to get up the hill at the speed you want to go, the 5.0 will be at about 4000 rpm. The 3.5 will produce the same 275 hp at about 3500 rpm.
Conversely, at 3000 rpm, the 5.0 produces 190 hp and the 3.5 produces 240 hp.

Yes, stock tires. Truck is pretty much 100% stock with 19500 miles.
Wow, that graph is eye opening. Unless the payload is a problem, the Eco should easily out tow a 6.2 3/4 ton. Better torque and less weight. That takes that option away. Wonder why they don't just put the Eco in the superduty?
I really would like to avoid the diesel as I still have a bad taste from my last emmisions equipped diesel.
If I could find a shop to do a gear swap that might take care of my issues.

It would help a lot to swap gears, most dealers will do it, I know mine offered 4.10s if I wanted to. The reason the ECO is not in SD, is not real clear, other than SD trucks are designed for continuous HD cycles and the ECO in current form might not be up to that kind of work. There have been reports of ECO overheating in extreme heat under heavy loads towing in the mountains. My guess is maybe the next generation ECO will end up in the SD trucks.

I tow an 8k lb 32 ft TT. I towed it with a 2012 F150 Max Tow (3.5 eco/3.73) and then went to a Ram 2500 gasser, then to a '16 Eco 3.55. Hands down tows best with the 2016. The 2500 was sluggish but I used it so little (8k miles in 2 years) that I couldn't justify the diesel price difference. I got rid of a Lexus and the truck, have just the '16 and couldn't be happier.
The 2016 tows great.
