Default opinions on the Ecoboost and towing

Hey everyone, New guy here with my first post. I've owned a ton of Fords, specifically the F150. To be exact, I've had a 95, 99, 2000, 2004, 2006 and now a 2010 with a 5.4. I'm getting ready to get another truck and am thinking of getting the Ecoboost but am a bit leary. I pull a 31' travel trailer that weighs around 9,000# fully loaded. I know the Ecoboost claims to pull 11,000# but the V6 just goes against everything we've ever been told for the last 40 years when going up against a V8, even though the HP and Torque ratings are higher than what is listed for my 2010. It seems like half the people I talk to say go with the Ecoboost that I won't be disappointed and the other half say to run. What has been your experience with pulling that much weight with the Ecoboost? I had toyed between either the Ecoboost or going with an F250 diesel. Thanks in advance and I look forward to reading the responses.

Look into an f150 with hd payload and max tow to take the full benefit of the 11300lb rating..

Do you pull that trailer no with your 2010 5.4? If so, you will.pull it far easier with the same truck equipped with an ecoboost. A 5.0 would be a bad choice so your other options are a 6.2 which will still rev a bit to pull it to a diesel.

9,000lb 31' travel trailer is F250 territory. The shortcoming of the F150 won't be the choice of engine. All three engines could pull it, some better than others. The F150 will be limited by payload and hitch rating. The tongue weight of that trailer will be around 1,200 lbs. You'll need the HD payload for that. You'll also need max tow to even get a hitch rated for 1,150 lbs. I would definitely be looking at a 250, diesel or gas.

Like others have said, you could do it within payload and rear GAWR of an F150 with HD Payload option. The Ecoboost would tow it, maybe better than the 6.2L in the F250.

But you would be limited by the weak hitch receiver rating of 1150#. There are shops out there that can strengthen these hitches though.

My only other concern would be Engine Braking. The EcoBoost doesn't have a lot. So you would have to be extra cautious on certain extreme downhill runs.

Personally, I would find a 9000# TT outside of my comfort zone with any F150 and would start looking at 250/2500's (The latest RAM 2500 with the 6.4L V8 and rear coils is nice). Unfortunately that means much worse gas mileage when not towing, but that's the price you pay when getting into the really big stuff.

EDIT: Or get that F250 Diesel. Just make sure the diesel has enough payload, as the diesel can really suck up a lot. Lot of people think an F350 is a better match with the diesel.

The 6.2 is a solid engine borrowed from the F250 and it is made for heavy use. This is the way that I would go if you are looking for any sort of longevity and FORD backs me up on this with the simple fact that you cannot find an ecoboost engine in an F250 but you can find a 6.2.

Better get the 6.2L this year then. It's not offered in the F150 in 2015.

Th best choice in the f150 platform for towing is the ecoboost. It will out tow the other engine choices hands down and will easily move the load. But at your weight, you are flirting with a super duty being needed for reasons beyond just pulling power. So how often are you towing that trailer?

As far as towing I am very happy. I have a 14 Lariat w/max tow and HD payload. This truck tows my 4 place inline enclosed snowmobile trailer (7x22+v front) much easier than my 02 1500hd w/6.0L All aspects of towing are better for me with this Ford.
