Default New Truck: Differential Choices

If the 3.15 is rated to tow above my needs is there any reason to get the 3.73 diff? Will I notice any towing difference if both are rated above my needs?

I'm looking at the 3.5L Eco V6.

you will have more torque off the line and you feel that pull difference with higher wt. if you hardly tow and only tow light loads then you'll likely be fine. My opinion is if you and or your friends/family don't then it's you they will come too. Better to have the most capable versatile rig possible and never worry can I do that. Good luck.

Also you should know that if your looking at the 3.5EB with 3.73 you will will only have access to a fleet XL model as that setup requires the HD payload pkg. perhaps the 2.7 EB with 3.73 would be a better choice for your needs.

I am looking at the 3.5EB with 3.73 xlt based on my discussion with the salesman this morning. Maybe he wasn't listening to me when he checked his current inventory?

hymn wasn't aware that was available yet. You can get the 5.0, 2.7 in a 3.73 with HD payload but the 3.5EB with 3.73 (non fleet) is a late availability.

Next time I visit the dealership I'll work the salesman a little harder on proving specs to me. I don't know why the 3.73 with tow pkg would be limited to the fleet XL in the EB 3.5 v6 when Fords whole campaign was how great the towing potential was for the EB.

Look on the inside door tag. That will tell you what gears it has.

No. My 2012 Lariat with EcoBoost engine has 3.15 axle ratio and that's all I need for towing trailers that weigh up to the 8,000-pound tow rating. In fact, I have towed much heavier trailers with no problems.

Will I notice any towing difference if both are rated above my needs?

The 3.73 ratio will give you more horses for jackrabbit starts, or for faster acceleration when merging into traffic on an interstate.

But the 3.73 is available only with the Heavy Duty Payload Package (HDPP). If you don't need the additional payload capacity provided by the HDPP, then you probably don't need the 3.73 axle ratio.

A good compromise is to order the Max towing pkg. That gives you a bit more payload capacity as well as the 3.55 axle ratio for increased GCWR (and tow rating).

But to reiterate, I'm perfectly happy with my 3.15 axle ratio in my 3.5L EcoBoost drivetrain. My only disappointment is my overall average 15 MPG when not towing. But I usually cruise at 79 MPH, so maybe 15 MPG is about as good as it gets?

Something to consider, that has yet to be mentioned, is that the 3.73 ratio results in poorer fuel economy.
