Maybe I missed it but what kind of trailer do you have, Boat, enclosed or just a open flatbed?

Since you bought a tri-ball, have you tried the 1 7/8"? As everyone else has said, it ain't going down far enough. Could be a faulty coupler. Just my $.02

I would loosen the nut so that the clamp is very loose, and then see if it seats properly. If you have it too tight, it won't seat down far enough.

It's pretty clear that since a 1 7/8 ball won't seat properly, and since there is nothing inside, that the clamp is stopping the hitch from seating. Has to be that.

With the trailer on the ball and not latched. Try putting you truck in reverse and drive and moving a inch or two to see if it falls into place.
